Tom Loper

Deacon of Home Groups

TVC Responsibilities:
As a deacon in Home Groups, I assist in training new group leaders, assist at GroupConnect, work with group mentors to facilitate their ministry, and visit existing groups to support them in their ministry.

When and how did the Lord save you?
As a sophomore in high school, I was invited to a Campus Life meeting by a friend. That summer I was invited by the director to go to a leadership camp. One of the speakers talked about all of us having a “God-shaped hole” that cannot be filled by anything but God. That resonated with the emptiness I was feeling. I asked the Lord to come into me and fill me that night, August 15, 1968.

When did you come to TVC and what brought you here?
In 2021 my wife and I had both recently retired, and we got a call from our son indicating they were moving to North Texas. After that call it took us about 15 minutes to decide we could do Texas and would move to be near them. They were already familiar with TVC, so we checked it out with them. After looking at several other churches, we decided that TVC would be where we would land.

If you had to give a TED Talk, what subject would you choose to speak on, and why?
“Godly Business as Defined by Scripture” – I was able to be a part of a conference in Uganda and lead a workshop on godly business. Genesis, the story of Joseph, Proverbs, and the parables of Jesus all lay out God’s plan and principles for managing a godly business. God has laid out how we can use whatever business we are in to further His Kingdom.

If you were to have your childhood dream job, what would your job be?
Forest ranger. I love the mountains, and the ideal job would be getting paid to live in the mountains.

Which fictional character would you be friends with in real life, and why?
Ransom from C.S. Lewis’ space trilogy. He got to visit different worlds, have a deep relationship with God, and found that he could do the impossible.
